Tear Away - Squares
The original inspiration for this series of paintings was a geometrical pattern that I saw in a restaurant. But the paintings themselves quickly became about the indescribable sense or emotion we have then we look at the walls of abandoned places. Torn wallpaper, paint layers of various colours, remnants of old curtains, added graffiti, and the ravages of time all tell us a compelling story about the place we are looking at. And the geometrical shapes? They became the spindles of an old railing or fence we are looking through to see the walls behind. All I can compare this feeling to is a sense of wonder and longing. I don’t quite understand it, but it draws me nonetheless.
