Tide is a Woman
Tide is a Woman, and she dances with the moon.
This piece, as some do, grew in meaning as she was birthed out of my mind and into the world of being. Some might say this was ontological design – as I was bringing her into being, she in turn was shaping me and my thoughts.
The idea for the piece came from a “hippie name” I was given on facebook – Moon Dancer. I loved it and thought it to be appropriate to me, and that in turn made me think I should find a way to represent her in time/space. That I did, ultimately in metal sculpture.
But as I worked, the material I had to use, its limitations, the limitations of the equipment I had to work with, as well as my own limitations lead the piece into a slightly different form. My thought was that she looked more like she was made of water. And of course, *click*, I realized that she was the tide personified.
So I gave her that name. Tide. She is ruled, pushed about, maybe even dances with the pull of the moon. Who better than Tide to dance with the moon? The more I thought of this the more obvious it became to me that the tide is a woman.
This layer of thought turns back in on itself, as one realizes that all women are in a dance with the cycles of the moon. So Tide also represents all womankind. Our bodies in tune with “la lune”, we dance through life.
